Today is my birthday. I have to admit, it’s kind of snuck up on me this year! The boy has planned a nice, lovely day for us – lunch at an Italian restaurant and a movie at the outdoor cinema tonight.

Grant writing
So, what’s been happening this last month!?
This is the worst time of the year for scientists in Australia – it’s grant writing season. Spend ages writing research proposals, hoping to get funding, which you won’t find out about until October-November.
Are any of you good grant writers? The Sloth Institute Costa Rica is looking for a Grant Finder and Writer who can voluntarily search for grant opportunities and apply for them on the Institute’s behalf. Details here.
Fellowships (salary funding), Grants, Papers, Ethics Applications… it’s been a bit full-on. Luckily the end is in sight now.

A Sloth in Sydney
Last night the Boy and Doza and I got back from 6 days away in Sydney, NSW. A welcome break from all the paperwork I’ve been doing over the last few weeks.
We went to the theatre (twice), went shopping, lunched with friends, hiked around Manly, and even climbed the Harbour Bridge! It was an exhausting holiday! But a great week away.

Sloth saved from highway in Ecuador

I think I’ve been “tagged” in some version of this story about a dozen times since it happened just under a week ago, so here it is:
Motorists were reportedly brought to a standstill by the cute sloth, who was spotted clinging to a road barrier in the middle of a highway on Sunday. The transit police rescued the cute creature and took it to a veterinarian. The rescued sloth has become an internet sensation, being reported around the globe.

But it’s okay, I’ve got next week off! Heading interstate for some super fun times! After the amount of grant writing and preliminary experiments I’ve crammed into the last couple of weeks, it will be good to get away from it all for a bit.
