Lucy Cooke Interview on Radio 4 in Four
Go have a listen to this interview of Lucy Cooke on BBC Radio 4. Did you know that female sloths scream in at the pitch of D-sharp? You can follow Lucy on Twitter or at Slothville.com.
Woolworths Super Animals sloth card NSFW
Managed to get one of the Woolworths Super Animals cards featuring the three-toed pygmy sloth.
The cool thing about this promotion for kids is that they can get a sound reader which, when you swipe the card through it, makes the animal sound of that card. I was really interested in the noise that the sloth card made! My little cousin happened to have one of the sound readers, and, well… have a listen.
Now, I’m not sure what the Woolworths promotional/research team was thinking when they picked this noise for the sloth. If you don’t know already, that noise, the screaming noise, is the sound of a sloth mating call. The noise a female sloth makes to attract males and tell them she is in heat.
Yeah. That’s right. All your kids are listening to horny sloths looking to get it on.
Hai thar, mai name is Coconut

Baby sloth gets the onesie treatment
Seeing as how I am home today because of being unwell, and spending the day in my pajamas, I thought this little clip of sloth babies Violet and Sebastian from the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica (who are also sick) getting the onesie treatment was highly appropriate!
Why do Sloths Hang Upside-Down?
Our Sloth Backpack Project reveals that sloths spend about 90% of their day inverted; the internal adhesions make that possible by reducing sloths’ energy expenditure. Because of their extremely slow metabolic rate and exceptionally low body temperature, it can take up to 30 days to digest a single leaf. Having a constantly full stomach means they can’t ingest much on a daily basis, so their caloric intake is very low. Sloths have virtually no flexibility in their energy budget: they generate just enough energy from their diet to move when and where required; beyond that, not much more is stored.
Why do sloths hang upside down for so long? Because they need to eat tender new leaves that grow on the outer tips of branches. These leaves often have a lower toxin content and are easier to digest. In order to reach these choice leaves, a sloth has to hang by its toes.
New Bed Clothes
Changed the sheets on my bed today. Lovely warm flannelette. A tan brown colour, in case you were wondering. It is a fabulous thing to have a comfortable, safe, snug place to sleep.
Just maybe, I would sleep even better, if I had Buttercup the sloth adorning my bed! Seriously, if anyone was thinking of a present for me for some reason…
Interested? Pick it up at Cafe Press. Buttercup is one of the famous residents of the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica.
Lunita the Sloth
One of the cutest members of the Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica, meet Lunita the sloth.

Happy Birthday Doza!
It’s Doza’s 5th birthday today! To celebrate I got him a hibiscus flower to nom and we are having a Meet the Sloths marathon this weekend. I might even bake some sloth cupcakes.
