A Sloth Named Velcro

Recently, American channel PBS screened a documentary titled “A Sloth Named Velcro” on Nature. Here’s a link to the video if you’re lucky to be in the US… it isn’t available in Oz unfortunately. I managed to get a hold of a copy though and it is fantastic! Very educational, informative, adorable, interesting and of course full of wonderful sloths of all kinds. Even taught me a thing or two.

On a similar note, someone at work found out about my sloth obsession not that long ago. They didn’t even know what a sloth was. Bless. Then today it got brought up by someone else and said coworker says “So, okay, tell me about sloths”. Well. Where do I begin…

Stress and Relief

It’s that time of year, when you know the holidays are only mere days away, and your body starts to prematurely enter vacation-mode. Tiredness, stress, and a feeling of CBF start to enter your psyche. This week (and it’s only halfway through) has been just that. Knowing that I have to still come in the week over Christmas/New Year’s sucks, and I’m just hanging out for a couple days off here and there.

I’ve been trying to get something done online (that’s quite important to me) for the last couple days (TBH, since March) and I was freaking out because the online link just wasn’t working. THANKFULLY this morning it’s all back up and running, and I was able to get it done and uploaded. Now it’s a waiting game to see if it will actually go through. If it does, Merry Christmas to me. I’ll keep you all posted 😉

My Sloth Christmas jumper arrived!!!

This came in the mail today! Just in time, Amazon decided to re-stock their small men’s size and, although it’s a bit baggy on me, and it’s now Summer in the southern hemisphere, I LOVE IT. I’ve been sitting here this evening in my sloth Christmas sweater, wrapping presents. I was going to put carols on but the boy stopped me on that one. Only 10 days to go!slothjumper

Please help save baby sloths from deformities

The incidence of congenital disorders in the wild sloth population appears to be increasing, and the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica want to do something about it. The deformities have all been similar; missing fingers/toes, malformed ears and misshapen limbs.

The deformities are likely to be a result of inbreeding due to habitat destruction and their subsequent confinement to isolated islands. The Sanctuary is working frantically to save these little babies, but also needs to find out whether a lack in genetic diversity is the cause, so steps can be taken to reduce the effects. You can help out, as I have, by donating here to cover some of the costs of this scientific research.

Little Dancing Sloths

This weekend I journeyed to my hometown to see the fam. It was a nice, relaxing weekend spent with some of the most important people in my life. In particular, I went to see my beautiful niece perform in her end-of-year dance recital for:

Hip-hop…

…and contemporary.

She was absolutely stunning and so poised for a girl of only eight. No fear! Very proud to call myself her Aunt and have her blow kisses to me at the end of the performance. Kinda makes some of the things you worry about on a daily basis seem trivial.

PS: The second pic is from some cute little greeting cards available on Etsy.

Christmas shows a go

Last night was the Christmas dinner for the university School that I work in. It was alright, had a few drinks, a dance, and a three-course meal. Nice to get out of the office for a bit!

So got home pretty late last night then had to be at work by 9am this morning. Then had the break-up lunch for the group at SA Pathology that we collaborate with, which was a Spanish feast.

Now sitting here in my recliner (reclined), typing (obviously) and feeling pretty slothish! Next Friday is the lab dinner, and then I think that’s it work-wise… Social Sloth.
