One year since the best experience of my life

I can’t believe today is one entire year since the best experience of my life to date: meeting, petting and feeding the only sloths in Australia, at Adelaide Zoo. I got to interact with Al G (top), and Miss C (bottom), the oldest sloth in the world. Sadly, Al G passed away earlier this year after contracting an infection, and as such, personal visits like this are no longer allowed at the Zoo. So I was particularly fortunate to be able to have this experience when I did.

Ironically, I was looking after my little cousins this morning, and had to drop them off at the zoo at 11am for a visit with friends. Ahh memories. One day I may get to experience the joy again of being able to interact with these amazing creatures. alg missc

Sarah and Duck and Penguins and Sloths

Browsing through Stan last night, came across this show called “Sarah and Duck“. So, obviously, had to watch it. Selected one of the episodes at random, titled “Sarah, Duck and the Penguins“. In this episode, Sarah’s googling activities to do, and she and Duck decide to dress up as a zookeeper and a penguin respectively and go to the zoo.

And then they arrive at the zoo, and there’s a sloth! And Sarah’s standing next to it! If you look closely you can see it’s even pictured on the zoo map sign.

I love moments like this.

Rest in Peace Al G

I got some sad news yesterday. One of the sloths that I met back in July last year, Al G, passed away after he couldn’t recover from a gastro infection. Now poor Miss C will be all alone. The zookeeper told me when I met them that no more sloths would come into the zoo after these two were gone, so now only the one will be present at Adelaide Zoo.

I was quite upset to hear of this, and only wish him rest in peace. Al GSandAlgae

New baby sloth at Topeka Zoo, Kansas

On November 20 there was a new arrival at Topeka Zoo in Kansas, USA. A little baby for sloths Jackie and Mocha! See more pics here.

Did you know:

A Hoffmann Sloth like this one (Choloepus hoffmanni) has a gestational period of 11.5 months. This is relatively long compared to other sloth species: the pale-throated three-toed sloth (Bradypus tridactylus) has a gestational period of 4.5 months and the pygmy three-toed sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus) is 6 months. On average, all sloth species give birth to one baby every year.

This was the day I met a Sloth, and it was the best day ever.

Words can’t describe how special this experience was. To touch, feed, talk to and be so close to these beautiful animals was simply breath-taking. I feel like a life goal has been fulfilled and can’t wait for the next time I can meet a sloth.

What made it even more special was a) I just met the oldest sloth in captivity IN THE WORLD, Miss C and b) I didn’t know the zoo actually had TWO sloths- I went in expecting one, and got to meet TWO, Miss C (40 years old) and Algae (23), both Hoffman’s two-toed sloths.

I will never forget this. IMG_6627 SandAlgae SandMissC

Bob the Sloth Tips Germany to Win the World Cup

I don’t really get into soccer very much (at all), and since Costa Rica got eliminated from the World Cup, even less. But when a sloth is involved in tipping, you just know I’ll be on board! Wonder if he will be correct this time?

Also, can I please have a sloth to make decisions for me???
