Antarctic Vortex

Everyone’s a bit cold this weekend. South Australia’s not too bad, but over in the Eastern states it’s a bit chilly, complete with “thundersnow“. I’ve spent the day inside: had a sleep-in, did some laundry, tidied the house, and baked a couple cakes for the boy’s birthday week this week. Tonight we’re heading out for dinner with his family, so hopefully it isn’t too windy and miserable out there! The best thing about wild and “woolly” weather is being able to stay in my comfortable, warm bed, and listen to the wind and rain outside.

Sloths may be a reservoir for Q Fever

Q Fever is caused by a bacterial infection, and causes flu-like symptoms, which may progress to pneumonia and occasionally hepatitis.

Whilst domestic cattle, goats and sheep are the most common reservoirs for Q fever, a new study in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene strengthens the hypothesis that sloths in French Guiana may be a WILD reservoir for Q fever.

Q fever often results in abortion within domestic animals, and the researchers found a 1-2 month lagged correlation between Q fever incidence and the number of three-toed sloth births. This was also associated with the rainy season.

Poor little sick sloths!

Hang the sloth out to dry

I was planning on going to Lululemon‘s annual “YogAdelaide” in Botanic Park today, but 33 degrees and raining kinda put me off. Also I had no-one to go with me. #sadsloth. Maybe I’ll have to have a Zumba Party later today.

I woke up early to the sound of rain pouring down outside, and initially was happy (I love the sound of rain whilst lying in bed, who doesn’t?) but then remembered I had two loads worth of washing out on the clothesline. Bugger. So they should be EXTRA clean, right? It’s not raining right now but I’m kidding myself if I can be bothered to go out there in my PJ’s (full disclosure: a romper covered in pink blue and green icy poles), get the washing in and re-hang it inside. Morning Kisses

Imagine this: you wake up, it’s raining outside, you turn over and, half asleep, receive a tiny kiss from the one you love.

And then you go back to sleep, because you are a sloth.
