Temperature affects food intake in brown-throated sloths

Sloths have one of the lowest metabolic rates of any mammal, and are therefore thought to have low rates of food ingestion.

A study published by Becky Cliffe et al in April (article link here) further shows that food consumption in brown-throated sloths is significantly affected by temperature, with increased consumption at higher temperatures.

We suggest that the known fluctuation of sloth core body temperature with ambient temperature affects the rate at which gut fauna process digesta, allowing for increased rates of fermentation at higher temperatures.

Hens, chicks, and crickets

Long weekend just gone was a busy one! I haven’t posted at all, apologies…

Saturday was an all-day wine tour for a good friend’s hen’s day.

Sunday night I caught up with my best girl who’s just gotten back from a trip overseas. It was sooo good to see her! Had a HUGE Mexican dinner followed by a churros date at Chocolate Taperia.

Then Monday was Australia Day, and our group all spent the day together having a BBQ lunch, playing backyard cricket (new PB woooo) and having a few drinks whilst listening to the JJJ Hottest 100.

Life is better with friends :)

This was the day I met a Sloth, and it was the best day ever.

Words can’t describe how special this experience was. To touch, feed, talk to and be so close to these beautiful animals was simply breath-taking. I feel like a life goal has been fulfilled and can’t wait for the next time I can meet a sloth.

What made it even more special was a) I just met the oldest sloth in captivity IN THE WORLD, Miss C and b) I didn’t know the zoo actually had TWO sloths- I went in expecting one, and got to meet TWO, Miss C (40 years old) and Algae (23), both Hoffman’s two-toed sloths.

I will never forget this. IMG_6627 SandAlgae SandMissC
